Graph of the Week: Highest Share Growth Since 2003

Members increased share balances by $45 billion in 2008. The $691.8 billion share portfolio grew 7.0 percent during the year, with both the dollar amount and rate of growth the highest since 2003.

 
 

Members increased share balances by $45 billion in 2008. The $691.8 billion share portfolio grew 7.0 percent during the year, with both the dollar amount and rate of growth the highest since 2003. Credit unions benefited from turmoil in both the stock market and financial institutions. With the stock market producing sharp drops and big daily swings, members turned to the safety of insure deposits. When higher share insurance limits were introduced in October, members had the ability to move even larger amounts to their credit union.
