The lyrics of Whitney Houston’s song “Greatest Love Of All” read, “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.” Yet an equally important task is the act of keeping them well. Saving the lives of sick children is exactly the reason the Credit Union Miracle Day partnership exists.
The Defense Credit Union Council is not only a key part of this Miracle Day partnership at home, but also supports a series of Credit Union Freedom Runs overseas. These sister runs support our troops and other U.S. citizens abroad and are an important element of the Credit Union Miracle Day family of races. Such a morale-boosting experience helps service members and other U.S. citizens stationed abroad feel more connected to their homeland.
Credit Union Freedom Runs scheduled for 2012 include:
Camp Arifjan‚ Kuwait ─ April 1
The organization is proud to have Camp Arifjan service members participating in the event for the second year. One of the finishers from last year’s race‚ Maj. David Fink, expressed his appreciation stating that he was “ecstatic with the event” and calling it a “great event for all.” The goal for this year is 800 runners and 100 volunteers.
U.S. Army Garrison, Wiesbaden‚ Germany ─ March 31
This is the inaugural run for the garrison, which has a population of more than 16‚500 service members and their families, but there is also a 5K run/walk and half-mile children’s run. The goal is to have 350 runners and 50 volunteers for the event.
"We are excited about this great opportunity to partner with credit unions and reach out to the soldiers and civilians in Europe,” says Robert P. Schloesser, Director of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) in Wiesbaden.
The FMWR organizations coordinate the logistics for both races. Participating troops will also receive T-shirts and military challenge coins supplied by Andrews Federal Credit Union ($870M, Suitland, MD).
Building on Success
In 2011, 16 defense-related credit unions donated approximately $113,000 to Credit Union Miracle Day through their race sponsorships, benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Every dollar donated by the credit unions goes back to help children in their own community.
In all, Credit Union Miracle Day has been able to contribute more than $5 million to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country.
Everyone can participate in these events in one way or another. Credit unions and leagues throughout the country have an opportunity to engage in a community activity that benefits children and their local hospital system.
“We are proud to help sponsor these two races for our service members and civilians residing in foreign lands,” stated Chris McDonald, president and CEO of Andrews FCU and a Credit Union Miracle Day board member. “The connection with the stateside races resonates with those involved and really makes them feel they are a part of a global event. I would challenge credit unions across the country to support the Credit Union Miracle Day family of races and get involved in any way they are able.”
Sponsoring any of the runs associated with Children’s Miracle Day provides a unique opportunity to reach out and touch many lives. From a Credit Union Freedom Run to support the troops, to the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run® in Washington D.C. that garners participation from more than 160 congressmen, to the Sacramento-based Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run, which brings national attention to the positive accomplishments of credit unions, this is your chance to be a key sponsor for a worthwhile, exciting event.
You have an opportunity to reach out and make an impact on those in need. For sponsorship information, visit www.miracleday.org. Please help us make a difference this year. Become a sponsor today.
