Outstanding credit card loan balances at credit unions and credit union market share have consistently increased throughout the past five years. In 2013, outstanding credit card balances increased 7.5% annually, marking the highest growth in five years.

Credit card payments accounted for 21% of the total number of noncash payments in the United States in 2012. This is a one percentage point increase over 2009. Meanwhile, the value of credit card payments represented 3% of total noncash payments in 2012.
