A total of 55 credit unions successfully completed mergers in the first quarter of 2013, a rate of nearly one merger every other day. Due to economies of scale, in which larger credit unions are typically able to operate more efficiently, many smaller credit unions have considered merging into larger credit unions. This trend mirrors the trends seen at banks and thrifts, although the speed of mergers at credit unions is slightly slower.
A total of 281 credit unions merged during 2012, the highest number since 2006. The highest merger activity was seen in 2004, when the number of credit union mergers was 331.
