Which states’ members lead the nation in credit card utilization?

 
 

West Virginia credit union members are utilizing their credit cards the most, with over 39.1% of available funds being used as of March 31. The credit card utilization ratio is taken by dividing the total outstanding amount of credit card balances by the total remaining amount of credit available plus the amount of outstanding balances. The $36 million that West Virginia credit union members have spent is out of the total $93 million available to them.

The overall credit union industry average for credit card utilization was 32.2% as of March. Following West Virginia as leaders in credit card utilization were South Carolina with 39.0%, New Hampshire with 37.9%, and Wyoming with 37.8%. The state with the lowest credit card utilization was Massachusetts, with only 24.8% of available credit being used by members.
