Rebuilding From The Ground Up

Loyalty Credit Union

Nicole came to Loyalty Credit Union through our partnership with the REfire Culinary Program. She had been convicted of a federal drug trafficking offense and served her sentence in Florida, far from her home state of California. During her incarceration, her family structure unraveled. Her daughter struggles with addiction, and Nicole’s mother, now in her 70s, is raising Nicole’s three grandchildren, including a newborn.

Nicole’s primary goal upon release was clear: to rebuild her financial stability so she could return home, help her aging mother, support her daughter’s recovery, and provide stability for her grandchildren. However, she faced significant barriers. Prior to her conviction, Nicole operated entirely in cash and had never established credit. After her release, she had charge-offs on her credit report and no active trade lines. Traditional lenders would not extend credit due to her criminal history, limited credit file, and past delinquencies.

Nicole met Loyalty Credit Union staff through REfire and later at Disc Village’s Sobriety Sisters program, where she was completing a required six-month residential stay. After attending a financial education session on the psychology of spending, delivered in partnership with GreenPath Financial Wellness, she approached us seeking immediate help.

Intervention and Products Used
Loyalty Credit Union took a structured, relationship-based approach:
• Opened checking and savings accounts to establish safe banking access
• Connected Nicole with a GreenPath financial counselor the next day
• Enrolled her in SavvyMoney credit monitoring
• Established a disciplined savings plan from each paycheck
• Approved a $300 unsecured credit card, her first-ever line of credit
No special exceptions were made. Staff followed standard underwriting guidelines designed specifically for credit-building and reentry populations, focusing on repayment behavior rather than solely historical credit scores.
