This past year, I had a member come in who was desperate to separate from her spouse and the debt tied to their marriage. At the time of her loan, her credit score was in the low 500s, so she was not hopeful that she would be able to do much at all. She had been told by another financial institution that her only option was to refinance the auto loan out of both of their names and into hers, so she came in expecting that outcome. Through a lot of hard work, credit cleanup, and a small exception, we were able to do more than that. We helped her get into a better, more reliable vehicle that no longer had any ties to her past marriage and provided safer transportation for her and her kids. Now, eight months later, she has maintained a perfect payment history and is happily driving her new car. She continues to reach out to me for advice about credit, how to build it, and how to keep it safe.
