Washington DC was the focal point for many Memorial Day ceremonies and remembrances this past weekend. The National Memorial Day concert and scenes from families and political leaders at Arlington National Cemetary were broadcast across the nation. They reminded all of us of the past and current sacifices of families with military members.
A local credit union went a step further on this weekend– in a unique way. The Pentagon Federal Credit Union and its Foundation sponsored a special concert of American patriotic songs by the US Army Chorus and the National Men’s Chorus. Over 700 people attended this free performance on Sunday. The Foundation’s special focus, such as special loan options for first time homebuyers and alternatives to payday lenders around military bases were descibed in the program notes. The Foundation’s assistance for the Fisher House program which provides short term housing for families of military personnel recovering from battlefield wounds was highlighted by Margo Szeliga, VP of Brand and Marketing, in her welcoming remarks.
Because Pentagon FCU pays the operating expenses for the Foundation, every dollar received goes directly to assist military personnel. The combination of Memorial Day’s purpose, the chorus’ spirited performances and the special role of Pentagon FCU in helping the Nation’s military veterans, made this a heartfelt and memorable occasion for all participants. It also was also an example of how creditunions serve their communities with more than loans and savings.
