A Cherished Presence And Notable Absence

Digital Federal Credit Union

In today’s fast-paced world, genuine human connections often feel rare. Yet, at DCU, the story of Larry and Duda is a powerful reminder that establishing relationships make a difference.

Larry has been visiting one branch for years, long enough that his presence has become a cherished routine. He could easily be helped by anyone, yet Larry always chooses to wait for Duda, a teller who joined our team not so long ago. Their relationship transcends age and background, Larry in his late seventies, Duda just entering her mid-twenties. Duda herself recognized the special nature of their friendship, once suggesting that we organize a birthday celebration for Larry, complete with a card and a gift card.

This summer, Duda noticed Larry’s absence. Larry’s roommate shared that he had suffered a heart attack and a brain bleed. Larry had been placed in a medically induced coma and was now in a rehabilitation center, slowly recovering. Determined to lift Larry’s spirits, Duda sent him an Edible Arrangement and gathered photos of the team to share with him. These photos were uploaded to Larry’s digital photo frame so he could see familiar, friendly faces during his recovery. His roommate explained that seeing Duda and the branch team created a positive effect on Larry’s mental health, bringing happiness and comfort as he worked toward recovery.

This story is not just about a customer and a teller, it’s about what happens when real people help and care for one another.
