Family Fraud Stopped In Its Tracks

Valerie’s keen instincts and dedication to member safety were on full display when a longtime Patelco Credit Union member called about closing a CD. Sensing something was off, Valerie uncovered multiple fraudulent attempts, including impersonation. She immediately locked the member’s account, filed reports with Adult Protective Services and the San Ramon Police, and successfully prevented further losses for our 85-year-old member.

In a remarkable turn of events, the impersonator called again while a police officer was present in the branch taking a report. This led to the shocking discovery that the fraudster was the member’s own grandson.

Valerie’s vigilance didn’t stop there. When the same member later requested a large withdrawal for a suspicious “gopher removal” service, Valerie flagged the transaction. This led to the uncovering of further abuse by the same family members. Thanks to her persistence, Valerie helped the member designate a Trusted Contact, her son, who stepped in to protect her from future harm.

Valerie’s compassion, courage, and quick action safeguarded a vulnerable member from ongoing financial and emotional abuse. Her unwavering commitment ensured the member was no longer alone in facing this difficult.
