From Heartbreak To Hope, 1 Step At A Time

After his wife passed on, a member came in just as lost as he could be. In their 60 years of marriage, she’d always handled the finances, and he didn’t even know where to start. He’d gathered up what he could —including her death certificate — but you could see plain as day he was overwhelmed. As he talked about her and all the plans they still had, he broke down right there. I came around the desk, gave him a hug, and let him have a good cry. I listened while he shared a little about their life together, then we eased into things, one step at a time.

Sitting side by side with his tablet, I walked him through online banking — how to find statements, look up transactions, set up bill pay, and keep things secure. I made sure he did it himself, so it wasn’t just me talking at him, but him really learning it. Watching him go from confused and hurting to smiling, saying how amazed he was at what he could do and how confident he felt … it  meant the world. That was the best part.

Moments like this remind me why I’m so thankful to work at a credit union. Around here, we believe in slowing down, taking time, and helping folks find their footing again — especially when life has knocked ’em down.
