Protecting A Member In The Right Moment

Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union

When our member Steve came into the branch looking serious, member consultant Marisol started asking questions. He said he needed to take out $12,000 from a few different accounts because his daughter called him from jail and needed money to be paid to an attorney. Marisol asked if he spoke to his daughter, he said yes. Marisol offered to cut a cashier’s check to the bail bondsman, but Steve said, “no, I’m supposed to get cash and then get gift cards to this attorney.”

That’s when she knew for sure it was a scam. Steve was so confident it was his daughter on the phone, but Marisol convinced him to try to call her. He countered, “She can’t answer, they took her phone.” Marisol finally got him to dial his daughter, to humor her. His daughter didn’t answer, but she called right back. “Hi dad, what’s up, I’m on my way to work.”

It was NOT her that originally called and was indeed a scam call. Steve spoke to his daughter in the lobby, with relief in his face. He took a minute, and a big breath, to collect himself and walked up to Marisol to thank her. He’ll connect with the police to report the call, but Marisol saved him a lot of money just asking a few more questions.
