Our Marketing & Community Development Manager regularly reaches out to the director of our local Ethnic Support Council. But during her most recent meeting, the tone had changed. ICE has become an increasing presence in our area, resulting in many immigrant families who are too afraid to leave their homes at this time, effectively turning the Ethnic Support Council into an impromptu food bank/delivery service. After some gentle probing, the Council allowed our credit union to pitch in. We put the call out to staff, and employees are signing up to volunteer left and right. Each week, we show up to shop for and sort food and basic supplies for each of the families in need. When we learned that the Council doesn’t even have proper shelving for their makeshift food bank, we purchased their shelves. It’s something we’re doing under the radar: no photos or social media shout outs. We do it because we know it’s the right thing to do for our neighbors.
