A formerly incarcerated individual recently walked into one of American 1 Credit Union’s branches shortly after release and asked to work with our team. During the conversation, the member expressed heartfelt gratitude for American 1’s involvement inside the correctional facility and for the time our staff invested before release ever occurred. They shared that this was the first time anyone had explained how banking, credit, and money management truly work, and that having access to this education changed how they viewed their future.
With guidance from our team, the member was approved for a checking account and, for the first time, a credit card. More than the approvals, the member repeatedly thanked our staff for believing in people who have never had access to financial education and for demonstrating a genuine commitment to their success. They left the branch feeling supported, confident, and prepared to move forward responsibly.
This outcome reflects American 1 Credit Union’s partnership with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Over the past year, American 1’s Financial Wellness Team has provided onsite financial education to inmates participating in vocational and re-entry programming within two years of parole. These sessions focus on practical skills such as budgeting, understanding credit, and managing debt. American 1 is now seeing participants enter branches after release to open accounts, seek credit guidance, and begin rebuilding their financial journey.
