The credit union industry posted positive growth rates in the third quarter of 2016 continuing a well-established trend but what is happening at the state level? Are some states growing while others are left behind?
The short answer is: No. Most states are growing assets, loans, shares, and members at comparable rates.
The following chart shows minimum, maximum, average (weighted), and median rates for growth metrics in the 50 states and DC. This table demonstrates how the industry is growing steadily nationwide. Across all four growth metrics, there were only two states that had one negative value each.

Although all states posted fairly even growth rates, some stood out for their exemplary performance. Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, and Oregon all ranked in the top 10 for each of these four growth metrics. It is worth noting Wyoming’s leading performance in asset, loan, and share growth was impacted by an interstate merger that occurred during the second quarter of 2016.
On April 1, 2016, Meridian Trust FCU merged with Panhandle Co-Op Credit Union in Nebraska.
